Some would say that oxygen is more important than food or water for life. They would certainly be correct in that statement. Try going without it for 5 minutes and see what happens. No, stop! I was just joking. We all know that if deprived of oxygen we will die in a very short period of time.
But with our absolute need for oxygen to sustain life, oxygen also has a dark side to it. During respiration the oxygen molecule splits to create an unstable oxygen atom or free radical. These unstable atoms will attack the nearest stable molecule to steal an electron. Although this action stabilizes the oxygen atom, it creates a new free radical. This begins a chain reaction that can result in the disruption of a living cell. It is this disruption or free radical damage that is generally believed to be the main factor in aging. Although we desperately need oxygen to live it is also a major factor in causing us to age.
Then Food Must Be The Number One Ingredient?
Although missing a meal could make you cranky like an old geezer, you really could live for a couple of months without lunch. For the average American, your food consumption may be causing you to become part of the new reality in America. This reality has seen a dramatic increase in diabetes and obesity over the last 20 years!
Obesity and its corresponding health risks have now overtaken the risks from smoking cigarettes. We are literally eating and drinking our way to an early grave. And, we have passed this habit on to our children. They are now at a higher health risk with a corresponding decrease in longevity. Not a good recipe for anti aging.
You Said “drinking our way to an early grave” So Water Can’t Be Number One?
You’re equating water with drinking coffee, soda or beer. You’re thinking that you get lots of it in the eight cups of coffee you drink or the several cans of soda you consume. Or maybe you’re counting the bottles of beer after work because it makes you go to the bathroom. SORRY! THESE DON’T COUNT! It needs to be pure water and lots of it!
Cool Facts to Impress Your Co-Workers!
Before I tell you why, let me give you some facts that you can share at work:
The Essence of Life!
As you can see, water is a necessary and fundamental part of our lives. In fact, what you drink literally becomes you! According to Dr. Henry S. Lodge, faculty member of Columbia Medical School and co-author of “Younger Next Year”:
“You replace about 1% of your cells every day. That means 1% of your body is brand-new today, and you will get another 1% tomorrow. Think of it as getting a whole new body every three months. It’s not entirely accurate, but it’s pretty close.”
It is what I call “The 1% Solution” towards improving your health and wellness!
How you nourish the 1% of new cells your body creates everyday will have a profound effect on your overall health. With that in mind, what you put in the liquid you consume has a direct effect on your cells!
Pure water contains no calories, no artificial sweeteners and colorings, and is fat-free, cholesterol-free, low in sodium and not acidic. It plays a major role in weight loss and weight management. Many regard it as the most significant factor in losing fat. Because it contains no calories you can consume as much as you want without weight gain. Additionally, it:
Because of this it is critically important to look at the beverages you drink. What they contain will have a direct affect on your health and aging.
Given all the beverage choices you have, it really comes down to just two choices:
Remember, our overall goal is to nourish our new cells with what they need to function at their most optimal level. When you look at all that we eat and drink, the one foundational ingredient that is essential for good health is pure water. It truly is the best ingredient for slowing down the aging process!
Until next time, may we both age youthfully!
